The Earth is our Lab

Home to the Geological Sciences Major at UQ, the new School of Earth Sciences is concerned with the study of all aspects of geology. The School offers training in the application of basic principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and computational sciences to unravel the evolution of Earth through time. We teach a new generation of students to discover, develop, and manage minerals, energy and other resources, both renewable and non-renewable, that are important for the economic development of Australia and the rest of the world.

Geological knowledge taught at the UQ School of Earth Sciences underpins Australia’s capacity to ensure a sustainable supply of natural resources and the use of these resources responsibly, and it is essential for solving environmental challenges such as global climate change.

The School of Earth Sciences offers students a world-class education in the following areas:

  • computational earth sciences
  • earthquake seismology and risk assessment.
  • environmental geoscience and surface processes
  • exploration geophysics
  • fossil fuel exploration and mine geology
  • geochemistry and mineralogy
  • geodynamics and tectonics
  • geochronology
  • hydrogeology
  • marine geology
  • mineral exploration and mine geology
  • paleontology and stratigraphy
  • sedimentology
  • paleoclimatology
  • volcanology

Earth Sciences at UQ enjoys an award-winning reputation in research and teaching supported by world-class facilities, including state-of-the-art experimental and analytical laboratories, supercomputers and visualization tools, and the Dorothy Hill Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, which houses the largest Earth Sciences collection in the Southern Hemisphere.
